TAPPA / STAGE 6: Rifugio Auronzo / Lavaredo / Locatelli—Hotel Croda Rossa

Questa breve tappa può essere combinata con la Tappa 5, o utilizzata per avere l’opportunità di un’esperienza ravvicinata delle Tre Cime o per scalare il Monte Paterno attraverso le gallerie risalenti alla Grande Guerra, che garantiscono vedute straordinarie sulle Tre Cime dalle ex postazioni di artiglieria. Casco e torcia sono essenziali.

Ci lasciamo la folla alle spalle e scendiamo l’isolata Val Rinbon, attraverso gli abeti ai cui rami pende la clematide selvatica, e raggiungiamo il Lago di Landro. Questo gioiello era ben noto all’epoca di Amelia, dal momento che si trovava sul percorso effettuato in carrozza tra Venezia e l’Austria.

Oggi c’è un’antica strada carrozzabile che passa davanti allo stesso hotel in cui Amelia e Lucy pranzarono durante la loro escursione da Cortina.

Questa tappa è quasi tutta in discesa, il che offre un po’ di sollievo dopo le salite e le discese delle tappe precedenti. L’Hotel Croda Rossa a Carbonin (Schluderbach) è un luogo confortevole e dai prezzi ragionevoli, ed è comodo per la tappa successiva, che ci riporta a Cortina.  

This short stage may be combined with Stage 5, or used as an opportunity to get a close-up experience of the Tre Cime, or to climb Monte Paterno through the World War I tunnels, which have incredible views of the Tre Cime from the former artillery installations. A helmet and torch are essential.

We leave the crowds behind as we descend the secluded Val Rinbon, through fir trees festooned with hanging wild clematis, to Lago di Landro. This beauty spot was well known even in Amelia’s time, as it was on the stagecoach route between Venice and Austria.

Today there is an antique stagecoach outside the same hotel where Amelia and Lucy enjoyed lunch on their day trip from Cortina.

This stage is almost all downhill, which provides relief after the ups and downs of all the previous stages. Hotel Croda Rossa, at Carbonin (Schluderbach), is a comfortable, reasonable place to stay and it is well placed for the next stage, which takes us back to Cortina.
